China censored gay love references in ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’

China has decided to censor references to homosexual romances in the latestfantastic beastsfilm, Dumbledore’s Secrets.
The film on April 8, a full week before the US release on April 15.
Typically, release dates for films in the country are later than those in Western countries to allow for extensive editing and censorship. However, this immediate release of Dumbledore’s secrets did not come without some control methods.
Warner Bros. confirmed that only six seconds were cut to allow for the film’s release in China, regarding lines of dialogue that indicated same-sex romance.
The lines are between main characters Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (played by Mads Mikkelsen) and include comments like “because I was in love with you” and “summer Gellert and I fell in love “.

Although those particular lines have been removed for Chinese audiences, the rest of the film remains the same and continues to highlight a close relationship between the two characters.
In a press release made public at news.com.auWarner Bros said they are “committed” to the integrity of their films.
“As a studio, we are committed to protecting the integrity of every film we release, and this extends to circumstances that require making nuanced cuts in order to respond sensitively to a variety of factors in the marketplace,” the entertainment company said at the point of sale. .
They continued, “We want audiences around the world to see and enjoy this film, and it’s important to us that Chinese audiences also have the opportunity to experience it, even with these minor edits.”
According to Business Intern, an official quota notes that China can publicly screen 34 foreign films a year. Filmmakers are also encouraged to support editing requests to allow their films to get edited.
In 2007, Harry Potter author JK Rowling said The headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore, was gay, although the character is not explicitly gay in the collection.
Dumbledore’s sexuality was alluded to in the first two fantastic beasts films, the first being released in 2016. However, it was not until the release of Dumbledore’s secrets that he came to life on screen.
