1. Gao Zhidan elected new president of the Chinese Olympic Committee

Gao Zhidan was elected president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) by secret ballot at an extraordinary meeting on September 7.

Gao, director of the General Administration of Sport of China, succeeds former COC President Gou Zhongwen.

2. Jeremy Lin joins the Guangzhou Loong Lions

Former NBA champion Jeremy Lin has signed a contract with the Guangzhou Loong Lions to participate in the new season of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), the club announced on September 5.

Lin recorded 11.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists during his NBA career. The Harvard graduate became a global sensation in 2012 during his time with the New York Knicks, in a period known as “Linsanity”. He became the first Asian American to win an NBA title with the Toronto Raptors in 2018. Lin joined the Beijing Ducks in 2019 and averaged 19 points in two CBA seasons.

3. Sichuan wins its first national women’s basketball title

Sichuan celebrated after winning the Chinese National Women’s Basketball Championship on September 9.

Sichuan edged Jiangsu 91-81 to claim their maiden title at the Chinese National Women’s Basketball Championship in Guangyuan, Sichuan Province on Sept. 9.

After recording three lopsided wins in group matches, title favorites Sichuan continued their momentum to knock out Shanxi in the quarters and Inner Mongolia in the semis.

Led by MVP Wang Xuemeng, who had 23 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the Finals overall to claim his historic national championship.

4. The new ABC season will start in October

The first leg of the 2022-23 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) regular season will be held in October in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province.

According to an announcement released by the league’s governing body on September 10, the first phase of the next regular season will be played in a league format with nine rounds of matches scheduled between October 10 and 30.

5. China’s basketball team looks back on its pains and gains after two months of overseas campaign
