China Weather Update: Heavy Snowfall Will Hit Parts of Northern China
Heavy snowfall will sweep across parts of northern China on Saturday and Sunday, bringing low temperatures, Chinese media reported citing the National Meteorological Center.
“From Saturday morning to Sunday morning, heavy snowfall or even blizzard is expected to hit parts of Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning, Shaanxi and Henan,” Xinhua reported. .
Some regions will see snow depths of up to 20 centimeters, the state news agency said.
The observatory urged the affected areas to take necessary precautions in traffic, transport and energy supply.
Meanwhile, China was forced on Friday to close highways and schoolyards in the capital Beijing due to heavy pollution.
It comes as China ramps up coal production and faces scrutiny of its environmental record in international climate talks.
The Beijing municipal government issued a yellow alert for severe air pollution which took effect from 4 p.m. Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported. Under the country’s air pollution warning system, red is the most severe warning. Next come orange, yellow and blue.
Adverse weather conditions are responsible for the smog blanketing Beijing and neighboring areas from Wednesday to Saturday, according to the city’s meteorological authorities.
