Chinese weather tech startup Ninecosmos secures $ 7.7 million war chest

BEIJING – Weather tech startup Ninecosmos Sci. & Tech recently raised 50 million yuan (about $ 7.7 million) in Series A funding, with Envision Capital being the lead investor.

Ninecosmos has its roots in the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Tsinghua University also owns a stake in the company which boasts of having powerful supercomputer, computer simulation and AI technologies.

The development of technologies for meteorological services requires a lot of time, personnel and funds. Strong skills are required in a wide range of fields. In addition to hardware for meteorological observations as well as algorithms and computing power for computer simulations of atmospheric and oceanic meteorology, there is a need to acquire and aggregate data sources, and then design solutions for each client industry.

With its exclusive weather forecast platform, Ninecosmos provides customized products for each industry.

It provides a cloud platform that industries working to protect air quality can use to simulate air quality. It has another platform for analyzing local pollution sources and their dispersion, and a weather navigation platform for the shipping industry.

With experience in operating the Chinese Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer, Ninecosmos is very competitive in the field of computer simulations. He says his air pollution forecast is nearly 90% accurate.

These services have already been presented to government organizations related to ecological environment and scientific research organizations in Beijing, Shandong Province, Jiangsu Province and elsewhere.

Ninecosmos makes detailed forecasts of atmosphere and ocean weather at high resolution of 800 meters in designated waters and provides weather services related to winds, waves, currents, sea temperatures, salt content , sea level and other factors. Its system is in practical use at Tianjin Port.

This year, the company focused on the shipping and clean energy sectors.

The maritime navigation services market is dominated by the Japanese Weathernews and the Norwegian StormGeo; The 15-day weather service rates for shipping range from $ 3,000 to $ 3,500.

According to ship-information provider Clarksons Research, the number of merchant ships of 100 gross tonnage or more exceeded 100,000 in February, and the global shipping services market is about $ 10 billion annually.

As the promotion of clean energy is expected to become a global trend, Ninecosmos intends to focus on business areas such as the observation and assessment of wind and solar resources, and extreme weather warnings.

Ninecosmos’ balanced list of corporate and government clients contributes to its long-term growth. The company’s annual sales exceeded 20 million yuan (about $ 3 million) in 2020, and the number of its employees rose to more than 70, from 45 at the start of the same year.

The company expects its annual sales to double in 2021.

36Kr, a Chinese technology information portal founded in Beijing in 2010, has more than 150 million readers worldwide. Nikkei announced a partnership with 36Kr on May 22, 2019.
